Maria
Tribe was born in Brighton and has been painting professionally since
1994. Her paintings are visual diaries based on encounters ranging from
a moment in time to journeys around the world. Inspiration is derived
from architecture, landscape, colour, music and language and also from
travels to Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, India, Australia, Egypt, Turkey
and Barcelona. Growing up by the sea developed a passion for water, scuba
diving and the luminous colours of underwater seascapes. The paintings
draw on history, monuments, the way events have been marked through time
and also everyday life. There is a fascination with the process of memory
and what remains: a taste, a person, a colour, an object, a sensation.
The work is a fusion of these triggers and a meditation on an experience
or journey. The process is very instinctive and the working process is
very much about creating unconsciously, having a “conversation”
with a piece, allowing things to emerge until a harmony is reached. |
